Consulting Case Competition 2010

"The Graduate Management Consulting Association ("GMCA") at the University of Toronto has been very beneficial in helping me enter professional services. Science and engineering gives a solid background in analytical skills, critical thinking, and the aptitude for learning required to be successful in consulting. However, the challenge is in being able to display those skills to people that matter within the professional services industry.

As a master's student with a vague interest in consulting, the GMCA provided me with three critical services: 1) informed me about the field of management consulting; 2) gave me the opportunity to display my skills to industry; and 3) prepared me for the interview process. For the first and second services, the GMCA's Management Consulting Case Competition was hugely important. First, it gave me a true taste of what management consulting is all about. Second, it brought together consultants from the major firms and gave me an avenue to display what I, as an engineering student, had to offer their organizations. The Case Competition even resulted in an interview with my current firm; once I had that interview, the material I had been exposed to through the GMCA's Practice Case Interview Series gave me crucial insight into what would be asked of me and what the interviewers would be looking for.

In my opinion, engineering and science students are as well equipped to be consultants as business majors. What hampers us, however, is a knowledge gap resulting from the specific training given to business students around the professional services recruiting and application process. What GMCA does so well is eliminate this knowledge gap; thereby letting the abilities we have to offer shine through."
