Tips on Resume/Cover letter writing for grad students from McKinsey (Toronto Office, Sept 2009).

Please note that these rules might vary for other firms depending on the vision of the firm and the people’s perspectives, so please do your own research for any firm.

1) Resumes between 2-5 pages (They understand that graduate students cannot fit everything on one page)

2) They like to see four elements in your resume
Problem solving
Make examples that show Intellectual Thinking, Practical Experience, Quantitative Comfort and Creativity
Achieving
Examples of Perseverance, Enthusiasm (e.g. How you kept a team going, a project done before a deadline), High standards of excellence
Personal Impact
Examples of Presence, Communication, Empathy and Coaching
Leadership
Evidence of Initiative, Teamwork and Entrepreneurship

3) The Cover letter could highlight the points which did not speak for themselves in the resume. If you are applying for an office, they want to see why you are doing so (e.g your family is there)

4) Academic performance (Undergrad+Grad Transcripts), Experience (Research and Business) and Leadership skills have the same weight in evaluation process.
