Vivek Mehta
Consultant, BCG
Vivek earned his MBA from the Rotman School of Management and also holds a Bachelor of Electrical & Computer Engineering degree from Queen's University. He joined BCG as a consultant in the fall of 2010. Previously, Vivek has spent 4 years as a sales & marketing consultant in the biopharmaceutical industry. He has worked on brand planning, forecasting, and commercialization projects at Genentech and Prometheus Labs, and was a business analyst at ZS Associates. In his spare time, Vivek enjoys tennis, skiing, playing poker, and traveling.

Steve McClelland
Consultant, BCG
Steve completed an MBA at the Richard Ivey School of Business, a Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Calgary, and is a CFA Charterholder. He joined as a summer consultant in 2009 and returned to a full-time position in 2009. During his summer with BCG, Steve worked for a Canadian retailer helping to develop a strategy that would address the needs of the various Canadian customer segments more effectively. He has prior experience at The Bank of Nova Scotia leading a customer analytics team within international credit cards, and at Air Canada and Aeroplan, where he started a CRM team and an internal consulting team. Outside of work, Steve is very passionate about golf, maintaining a handicap of 3, and when he's not on the links is looking to travel somewhere exotic or sample some spicy foreign food. "I joined BCG because of the perpetual supply of challenge, the opportunity to work with amazing people on tough issues, and the realization that this was a place I could push (and would be pushed) to reach my maximum potential."


Networking Lunch & Viewing the Final Round of Case Competition

The GMCA invites you to a networking lunch and the final team presentations of our third annual Case Competition.

To buy tickets: The GMCA will be selling $10 tickets for the "Networking Lunch & Viewing the Final Round of Case Competition" at the Crack the Case Session and the LSCDS Consulting Seminar until April 29, 2011. Tickets will also be sold at the door for $15, but tickets are limited, so it will be first-come first-served.

Have you ever considered a career outside of academia that allows you to use your critical thinking skills?

The highly anticipated GMCA event, the Management Consulting Case Competition, is back again for the third year! This competition is designed for graduate students and post-doctoral fellows from all departments who want to explore the management consulting industry and to challenge themselves in solving business case studies in a competitive learning environment.

You will learn and obtain feedback from experienced consultants in the 'Crack the Case' session and Advisory Round before the competition. No previous management consulting or case experience is required.

Can't find a team? Missing one more member? Don't worry! You can also submit your application either as an individual or an incomplete team and we will find members for your team.

Application Process

How to enter:

  1. Review competition rules.
  2. Apply for an individual or form a team that consists of four people according to the eligibility criterion.
  3. Team members must be current graduate students and/or post-doctoral fellows affiliated with the University of Toronto and maximum of one current University of Toronto undergraduate student, MBA student, and/or alumnus is allowed per team.
  4. For an individual application, submit one application form and a one page resume to GMCA.UofT@gmail.com with subject line "Individual - Case Comp Application". The GMCA will match you with other participants to form a complete team.
  5. For a team application, submit one application form as a team and resumes of all team members (one page per person) to GMCA.UofT@gmail.com with subject line "Team - Case Comp Application".
  6. Registration closes on Friday April 8, 2011, 11:59pm (EST).
  7. Applications will be reviewed and participating teams for the competition will be notified via email by Tuesday April 12, 2011.
If your team is selected:
  1. Provide $80.00 CAD team registration fee in cash before Friday, April 15, 2011 to GMCA Executive Team at UofT St. George Campus.
  2. Attend the 'Meet and Greet' dinner reception and 'Crack the Case' session on Tues. April 26, 2011.
  3. Get feedback from judges before the competition at the Advisory Round (not mandatory) on Thu. April 28, 2011.
  4. Attend the competition (mandatory) on Sat. April 30, 2011.

Eligibility

  1. Current graduate students and/or post-doctoral fellows affiliated with the University of Toronto.
  2. Maximum of one current University of Toronto undergraduate student, MBA student, and/or alumnus per team.

Case Preparation and Presentation

  1. The use of external sources is allowed, however keep them to a minimal and only use them if they lead to the final recommendation. For any external resources, use the data from the same time period as the case.
  2. Presentations must be made using Microsoft PowerPoint as .ppt files and they will be loaded on PC laptops. Also submit a PDF version of the presentation as back-up.
  3. No video files will be allowed for the presentation.

Advisory Round - Not Mandatory (Thurs. Apr. 28, 2011)

  1. To confirm attendance of the Advisory Round, submit your one-page summary sheet to GMCA.UofT@gmail.com (Subject: Case Comp Advisory Round Team No.) before Thurs. Apr. 28, 2011, 5 pm (EST). GMCA will assign room numbers and time slots to attending teams via email.
  2. Each team will be given a 30 minute time slot, consisting of 10 minutes presentation and 20 minutes feedback from a consultant.
  3. Minimum one member per team must be presenting.

First and Final Rounds - Mandatory (Sat. Apr. 30, 2011)

  1. All teams must submit their final presentations (ppt and PDF versions) to GMCA.UofT@gmail.com (Subject: Case Comp Presentation Team No.) before Sat. April 30, 2011, 8 am (EST).
  2. Teams must check-in at the reception desk no later than 30 minutes prior to the start of their presentation.
  3. In the First Round, each team will be given a 45 minute time slot, consisting of 5 minutes setup, 20 minutes presentation, and 20 minutes Q&A and feedback.
  4. In the Final Round, each team will be given a 35 minute time slot, consisting of 5 minutes setup, 20 minutes presentation and 10 minutes of Q&A.
  5. Signs for five minutes and one minute remaining will be shown to the presenting team in all rounds.
  6. All four team members are required to present material in First and Final Rounds.
  7. The three finalists will present using the same presentations as the First Round (no slide modification is allowed); however, they may make verbal changes based on feedback received.

Judging

  1. During the First Round, teams will be divided into three sections each consisting of three teams.
  2. From the First Round, judges will deliberate to choose the top team from each section to present at the Final Round and for Honourable Mention recipients.
  3. The presentation in the Advisory or First Round will not count towards the evaluation of the presentation in the Final Round.
  4. From the Final Round, judges from all sections will deliberate to choose the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize winners.

Others

  1. Business casual attire is appropriate during the case presentations.

  3. All materials produced during the Case Competition are the rightful property of GMCA Management Consulting Case Competition 2011.
  4. Any violation of the rules above will result in immediate termination and disqualification of the team. Any decision of termination and disqualification is final.

Judging Criteria

Judges will generally be considering the completeness of the analysis, the quality of the presentation and the ability to respond to the judges' questions.

Erin Inhae Kim
Business Analyst, Accenture
Erin is not a stranger bridging management consulting and her academic background in engineering - her team was awarded second place in the 2009 GMCA Case Competition, served as co-chair of Leaders of Tomorrow:Graduate, holds an M.A.Sc. through the Centre for Management of Technology and Entrepreneurship, and is now part of the Management Consulting practice at Accenture. Experienced in leadership development, organizational change, and process improvement, Erin is passionate about creating networks, coaching, and learning. She strives to leverage these elements and her background in engineering to connect management consulting with applications in technology to improve organizational performance. Cross-aligned in the Management Consulting group with Accenture, Erin has been involved with strategy development, training, health care, sustainability, and resources since joining. She managed a project that improved the quality of care and patient throughput in emergency departments using innovative technology and analysis and designed equipment for a leading pharmaceutical company to save millions of dollars. Erin has demonstrated strong business understanding through achievements in consulting competitions with the University of Toronto, has been deeply involved with student leadership initiatives for over 7 years, and taught Leadership and Organizational Development overseas to university students. In her free time, she volunteers with Aboriginal youth, at homeless shelters, seeks opportunities for travel, plays soccer, competitively dragonboats, and runs.

Hwan Kim
Business Analyst, Deloitte
Hwan is a Business Analyst in the Corporate Strategy practice of Deloitte Consulting. He has worked with a variety of clients in diverse industries from financial services to retail to help them enhance their performance. His previous work includes business transformation, financial process redesign and corporate reorganization.

Prior to joining consulting, Hwan worked as an analyst for a multinational investment bank, where he focused on the capital markets for life insurance companies. Hwan holds a Honours Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology and Economics from University of Waterloo.

Jennifer Lee
Senior Manager, Deloitte
Jennifer is a Senior Manager within the Financial Advisory, Performance Enhancement and Restructuring practice. She has over 10 years of experience working in marketing and competitive strategy. Most recently, Jennifer has worked in various marketing functions and taketo- market product lead roles, in addition to 100-day strategic planning for a large Canadian telecom company. While in the telecom industry, Jennifer was responsible for the fastest take to market product launch for the WiMAX branded product line.

Her industry experience includes a large US telecom company in Asia/ Pacific where she worked in Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A) and Treasury functions; a large US consumer electronics company in Germany; and a large US entertainment company in Canada in various marketing functions. In addition to her private work, Jennifer has worked with large international aid organizations in developing the strategic plan focused on restructuring and enhancing the performance of the microfinance institutions in Azerbaijan.

Jennifer holds a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) from the Rotman School of Business and an Bachelors of Arts, undergraduate degree from the University of Waterloo specializing in International Trade, Political Science and Management.

Justin Toupin
Business Analyst, Deloitte
Justin is a Business Analyst at Deloitte Financial Advisory Services and recently joined the firm in 2010. Prior to Deloitte, Justin worked as a computer programmer developing optimization models for use in chemistry or chemical engineering. He also worked for 3 years at a private research institute developing treatments for neurological disorders (specifically Epilepsy and Alzheimer's Disease). Most recently, he worked in the financial industry developing optimization systems for large investment trading accounts.

Justin holds a Computer Science background from University of Waterloo and a BEng from the University of Guelph. Recently, He completed his MASc with the Centre for Management of Technology and Entrepreneurship (in the department of Chemical Engineering & Applied Chemistry) at the University of Toronto. His MASc degree focused on optimization techniques and how they can be applied to finance.

Adrian Xu
Business Analyst, Deloitte
Adrian is a Business Analyst in the Performance Enhancement Advisory group of Deloitte's Financial Advisory practice. His expertise lies within the areas of biotechnology, pharmaceutical development, telecommunications, digital media, marketing, market research, and competitive strategy. Adrian has worked with a variety of clients such as private equity firms specializing in pharmaceutical royalty and telecommunications investments, leading retailers, and provincial / federal level government. Adrian specializes in the areas of commercial / financial due diligence, digital media, process optimization, operational analysis, and competitive analysis.

Prior to Deloitte, Adrian worked as a marketing associate for a biotechnology firm, where he played key roles in the company's goal to break down barriers into novel market segments. By revamping the company's marketing materials to best engage the target audience scientifically, Adrian helped increase market penetration and branding awareness. Adrian also spearheaded efforts in establishing the company's social media strategy and framework.

Adrian is working towards a Masters of Biotechnology degree from the University of Toronto, where he also holds a Honours Bachelor of Science specializing in Physiology.

Meisha Bynoe
Associate, McKinsey & Company
Meisha joined McKinsey and Company as a Consultant in the Toronto office in January 2011. She holds a Ph.D. in Microbiology from Yale University, where she looked at the interactions of viruses with the human immune system. She earned her Bachelors degrees in Biology and Music at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Outside of work, she enjoys exploring the city, dancing tango, reading and attempting to play piano.

Wojciech Gryc
Associate, McKinsey & Company
Wojciech is an associate af McKinsey & Company, where he works as part of the Business Technology Office. Since joining the firm, his client work has focused on enterprise-wide use of data in marketing, sales, and banking. His work focuses on how companies can incorporate data into forming and reaching their strategic goals. He also has experience in IT strategy development and planning.

Prior to joining McKinsey, Wojciech completed two M.Sc. degrees at the University of Oxford, where he studied on a Rhodes Scholarship. His degrees were in in Mathematical Modeling and Social Science of the Internet, where he focused on the use of social network analysis and machine learning in public policy and politics. He has also spent time working at IBM Research, and has several academic publications and patents pending.

Outside of academia, Wojciech spent 7 years running Five Minutes to Midnight, an NGO focused on promoting media development in impoverished and war-torn regions. The work has allowed him to start media and youth engagement projects in Kenya, Brazil, Chad, Burkina Faso, and other countries.

Zemfira Khisaeva
Associate, McKinsey & Company
Zemfira is an associate in the Toronto office of McKinsey & Company. Since joining the firm in 2010, she has worked with clients across a range of industries, including Metals and Mining, Pulp and Paper and Aerospace on subjects ranging from developing portfolio strategy to conducting a product development transformation.

Before joining the firm, Zemfira gained experience in operations and product development at MDA, mid-sized aerospace company, and Bombardier Aerospace, one of the leading aircraft manufacturers. Zemfira received her PhD in Mechanical Engineering from McGill University, and B.Eng. in Petroleum Engineering from the Ufa Petroleum University in Russia.

Diana Wong
Associate, Oliver Wyman
Diana is an Associate for Oliver Wyman's Health and Life Sciences Practice. She focuses on strategy for pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device companies. Previously, Diana consulted in diverse industry areas from financial services to non-profit organizations at various consulting firms. Outside of work, Diana is a Vice President and Board Member for Endeavour Volunteer Consulting for Non-Profits; a pro bono consulting firm in Toronto. Also, Diana was a Lecturer at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China teaching business strategy to undergraduate business students. In addition to volunteering for Endeavour, Diana continues to be involved with the Life Science Career Development Series at the University of Toronto as a mentor and guest speaker.

Diana holds an MBA in Health Sector management at the Richard Ivey School of Business, a Master of Science in diabetes research from the University of Toronto and a Bachelor of Science (Honours, Biochemistry) from Queen's University.

Darren Lafreniere

Darren Lafreniere is the owner of Final Round Prep, a company that provides professional recruiting support to students and professionals who wish to pursue careers in the Management Consulting industry. He is also the Director of the Ivey Consulting Project and a Career Advisor at the Richard Ivey School of Business.

Prior to his current role, Darren gained a wealth of experience in both the entrepreneurial and corporate environments. As the owner/ operator of an auto parts company, he marketed and sold high performance aftermarket parts to customers across North America. As a Management Consultant, he worked with A.T. Kearney consulting clients across seven major industries on various strategic issues including logistics optimization, organizational restructuring and operational cost reduction.

Darren holds an MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business and a BA from the University of Manitoba.

Ruslan Dorfman
MBA Student, Rotman School of Management
Dr. Dorfman is the operations manager for The Neurosciences & Mental Health Program at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. Trained as a molecular geneticist at the Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel, Dr. Dorfman has over eight years research experience in cystic fibrosis and other complex diseases. As the co-author of over 20 peer-reviewed articles and a former CIHR postdoctoral fellow, he currently holds the "Science to Business" CIHR scholarship. Upon completion of an MBA degree through the Rotman School of Management (expected in summer 2012) Dr. Dorfman hopes to facilitate the implementation of personalized medicine and genetic consulting in the Canadian Health Care System.

Tatiana Lomasko
MBA Student, Rotman School of Management
Tatiana is currently completing her MBA at the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto. Prior to her MBA, Tatiana received her Master of Science degree in 1996 from Altai State University, Russia with a major in Mathematics and Computer Science. In 2008, she received her Ph.D. from the Institute of Medical Science at the University of Toronto. The topic of her thesis was One-hit stochastic decline in a mechanochemical model of cytoskeleton-induced neuron death, which had been funded by NSERC. She is currently a Scientist/Project Manager at the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research. She conducts bioinformatics research in genome analysis. Her hobbies include volleyball, hiking, cycling, reading, and playing piano.

Zayna Khayat
Associate Principal, SECOR Consulting
Dr. Zayna Khayat is an Associate Principal with SECOR Consulting's Toronto office. She is also head of SECOR Toronto's Health and Life Sciences sector. She joined SECOR in the fall of 2010 and is currently providing strategic and operational advice to Canadian health and life sciences organizations in the public and private sector.

Prior to joining SECOR, Zayna was a Principal with the Toronto office of The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) from 2001 to 2010. There, she helped North American and international for-profit and not-for-profit clients in a variety of sectors including telecom, financial services, aviation, and (primarily) health care solve diverse business issues including strategy and organizational re-design. At BCG, Zayna was a core member of the firm's Health Care Practice and Organization Practice, and was an Ambassador to BCG's Strategy Institute, the "R&D"engine of the firm, where she led the Sustainability Initiative partnership with MIT Sloan Review, and helped build BCG's Sustainability Practice.

In the fall of 2011, Zayna will be instructing the Health Care Consulting course at the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto.

Zayna earned her Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Toronto / Hospital for Sick Children (2001) where she was a scholar of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. She has more than 12 publications and chapters in international journals and textbooks.

Dr. Khayat is a senior advisor to Endeavour Volunteer Consulting Netowrk (EVCN), a volunteer based consultancy that provides strategic and management advice to non-profit clients in the GTA. Dr. Khayat provides pro bono strategic advice to various non-profit organizations in the health care sector, and is currently helping a Canadian philanthropist establish a personalized medicine service for advanced stage cancer patients in Canada.

Zayna speaks proficiently in French and Arabic, and resides in Toronto with her husband and 3 children.
